New Mac with M1 -an absolutely stunning debut

The New M1 chip is so powerful!

Apple launched the new Mac with its own Apple design chip for the Mac computer line 1 week ago, and this event also an online event, so in less than an hour event, Apple brings the M1 chip to MacBook Air, the 13-inch MacBook Pro, and the Mac mini.Apple first detailed its transition from Intel to its own processors earlier this year — but this event was all about diving deep into what that reality now looks like and when you’ll be able to get your hands on a computer featuring the just-announced M1 chip. The early performance numbers proffered by Apple and others looked promising. By switching away from Intel chips to its own Apple silicon M1 design, the latest Macs were much faster than previous versions, even faster than most Windows PCs.

What is so special about M1 chips?

Apple is making the jump to a 5nm chip called M1. It’s comprised of an octa-core processor, which Apple says contains the fastest CPU cores of any processor ever made and the best performance per watt of any CPU in its class on the market. The M1 also has an eight-core integrated graphics processing unit, and Apple again touts that it’s able to provide better performance than the “latest PC laptop chip” while demanding less power.

Can I use my current software on the new Mac?

The answer is generally yes, the Mac chip is very special, which is united the CPU, GPU, and the many other controllers, it’s based on the ARM structure.  there are apps that have been optimized as universal apps to run natively on the M1. Mostly Apple’s own apps, which already ran great on Macs even before this. There’s also DaVinci Resolve, a video editing app, and Microsoft Office, both in beta form. Some others are coming soon, such as Adobe’s Lightroom, although Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere — all programs I use regularly — are tantalizingly out of reach, coming in M1-native forms sometime in 2021. Until then, you’ll need Rosetta, Apple’s x86 emulator. So you will see a message like below comes up, Apple has software called Rosetta that will work to get the x86 software work on the new Mac.

Is it the right time to upgrade my Mac now?

If you are using software like web browsing, office documents editing, yes it’s a good upgrade. So far all Apple software has been build to adapt the new M1 chip, including the final cut. If you have software which is very critical for everyday job, and its unclear for the software bugs on the Mac Big Sur OSX and well for the M1 chip.  So wait till your software company releases the new compatible version.

What else is new?

Apple officially launched the new MacBook Air with M1, one of the first macOS devices to feature its new chip.

13-Inch MacBook Pro features the longest battery life of any Mac, according to Apple, with up to 20 hours of video playback.

The new M1 processor is also heading to the Mac mini desktop. Apple says the M1-equipped Mac mini boasts three times the performance of the previous iteration that housed a quad-core CPU.

Apple says they will bring the Apple design chip to the iMac desktop and Macbook Pro 16-inch next year.

Here is a comparison chart with old MacBooks:

A Powerful new MacBook Air

Starting Price: 7,999 RMB

On the outside, the new MacBook Air is nearly identical to the Intel-based one Apple released earlier this year. It has the same well-loved wedge-shaped design, 2560 x 1600 screen that maxes out at 400 nits of brightness, Touch ID fingerprint login, reasonably good speakers, Apple’s revised scissor-switch keyboard, and that massive trackpad.

It also has the same starting price: 7999 RMB for a model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

APPLE KEPT THE DESIGN EXACTLY THE SAME

Apple is very proud to announce that there’s no fan in the Macbook Air anymore, for one thing, just an aluminum heat spreader.

From what the blogger testing video on youtube, it does not get as hot as the last-gen Air even with the video editing software.

So this is the 2nd time Apple use the no-fan design on Mac, the last time was the year 2015, on the 12-inch Macbooks.

PRO-LEVEL PERFORMANCE

The MacBook Air performs like a pro-level laptop. It never groans under multiple apps. It handles intensive apps like Photoshop and even video editing apps like Adobe Premiere without complaint thanks to new M1 chips.

50% BETTER BATTERY LIFE

Apple is claiming that this machine can get 18 hours of video playback and “15 hours of wireless web,” both of which are very large claims. The company tells we should expect battery life to be as much as 50 percent better than the last Air, and the battery inside this computer isn’t any bigger than the previous models. All of those improvements come down to increased efficiency.

Features of Macbook Air

+ Excellent Retina display with P3 wide color
+18 hours battery life
+ Good graphics and computing performance
+ Up to 3 times faster than the last-gen Air
+ No fan design, super quiet
+ Instant waking up from sleep

MacBook Air+Fan=MacBook Pro

Starting Price: 9999 RMB

MacBook Pro has a bigger battery, touch bar, and better microphone system, and of course space for a fan.

A running fan can cool down the computer and keep the same performance for a heavy computing task like running a video editing, or many software opens at the same time.

Here is the chart that has the features for the Macbook Pro M1 chip.

Features of Macbook Pro with M1

+ Excellent Retina Display with 500 nits and P3 wide color
+ Superb audio quality.
+ 20 hours long battery life.
+ SSD storage options up to 8TB.
+ Three-mic array brings studio quality
+ Instant waking up from sleep

MAC MINI WITH M1

Starting Price: 5,299 RMB

The Mac mini has always been Apple’s most flexible desktop computer. Sure, most people go for the traditional experience and plug in a display, mouse, and keyboard — but you can also have it serve as a home theater PC, or put it to work with a professional photo or audio editing, or turn a group of minis into a server farm.

Apple has dropped the starting price for the M1-powered Mac mini down to 5,299 RMB, which is less than before. For that money, you get an eight-core CPU, eight-core GPU, 256GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM. The Apple M1 chip stays the same no matter which configuration you choose, and it matches the one in the new 13-inch MacBook Pro. Like MacBook Pro, the mini has a fan for cooling, but it also has the most efficiently cooled chassis of all the new M1 Macs. As a result, it’s technically the best performer — even if only by a smidge.

Aside from returning to a silver exterior from the previous space gray, this mini looks mostly like the old one. Compared to the new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro, the Mac mini has actually undergone the most significant outward design change: it lost a couple of ports.

Apple has gone from four USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 ports to just two — plus the pair of USB-A ports that are still present. The Intel Mac mini remains available for those that demand maximum ports or more RAM.

Perhaps the biggest area where the Intel-based Mac mini trounces the M1 version is in RAM. You can outfit 2018 mini with up to 64GB of memory, whereas the new model tops out at 16GB just like the M1 MacBook Air and Pro.

Since the M1 Macs no longer supports external GPUs, you’ll always be limited to the graphical horsepower you get out of the box. That’s perfectly adequate for photo and 4K video editing, but the upper echelon of workloads might demand something more — which may warrant considering the Intel model and an eGPU.

The M1 Mac mini is the first to include Wi-Fi 6, though unlike the Intel model, there’s no option for getting it with a 10Gbps Ethernet port — just regular gigabit. But Wi-Fi performance has been very strong.

Features of Mac mini with M1

+ Better deal than last-gen
+ 3 times faster than last-gen on computing speed
+ Redesigned cooling system for better performance
+ Now with Wi-Fi 6
